Windows Installer

Okay, so I just got a new computer with Windows XP, and am trying to install
Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0, Update 6 that I downloaded. Every time
I try to install it, my Windows Installer pops up and says it's
"initializing". Then I try to cancel it, and it tries to cancel forever with
no luck. Is it a Windows Installer problem, or am I doing something really
dumb?

Let the Windows Installer do what it is trying to do, ie install JRE.

Lots of programs use the Windows Installer to install.

Sorry, I should have said that it is "initializing" for more than 10 minutes,
and nothing else happens, then I try to cancel it.

3 things you can try:
1: reboot the system
2: stop\start the windows installer srvice
3: update to the latest installer via Microsoft update.

I have seen this problem before, btw, and rebooting usually fixes it.

I finally figured out that it was my Anti-virus program that was stopping me
from doing anything. Thanks for all your suggestions!
