stop windows installer from opening

how can i stop the "windows installer" from opening when i am trying to open
some programs?
when i try to open the "search all files and folders" in windows, a window
that says "windows installer" pops up and just stays there, when i let it run
all night it says the windows installer could not start. this window also
pops up in some of my other programs. i am using windows xp pro, help please.

I followed the instructions from this website and the problem was solved.
