Windows Installer pops up whenever i try to run a program

I installed the latest version of Internet Explorer, and ever since whenever
I open any Microsoft Office Program or Internet Explorer a Windows Installer
window pops up saying Preparing to install, which clears after about 30
seconds. this is unbelievably annoying. i have uninstalled IE7, I have
restored PC to an earlier point, tried changing the registry as advised on
some websites, but no luck. Please tell me how to disable Windows Installer .
I am running XP Home by the way, not pro. Thanks

I have the same prob. you can stop win installer poping up by disabling it.
Go to 'start, run, type msconfig. open programs or start-up. untick the box
'windows installer'. click apply. need to reboot.
You will need to do the reverse when you want to install a programme/software.
Does not solve the prob but stops the win openingall the time.
