Windows Defender, Visata and the 0x80240029

Hello -
I am running an HP, OEM version of Vista Home Premium. As I have
discovered, Windows Defender is an integrated part of the OS, and my copy of
Vista has been activated and registered.
About three days ago, I noticed a little yellow "!" on the Defender icon
tried to check for updates and received
the following error:
Error found: Code 0x80240029
I have spoken to HP about this and they seem flummoxed. I have tried
several of the suggestions in the forums but have yet to eliminate the
problem. Is there anything anyone can suggest? Thanks in advance and good
luck.
I have tried to manually update definition files and am aware of the .zip
file fix that's advertised earlier in the group...I have no intent of messing
with batch files that aren't ms certified. What I'm afraid of is that this
might also be an issue encompassing Automatic Updates at some point - people
with these defender problems keep mentioning that some updates aren't showing
up as available, etc.
Again, any help would be appreciated.

I have the same error on a new Dell XPS M1210 laptop. I have read various
suggestions about turning off automatic updates etc. But the work-around
solution that works for me is switching off Microsoft Update, leaving Windows
Update still on. Go to Windows Update in Control Panel, click on Change
Settings and untick "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window.

If I put Microsoft Update back I get the error when updating Windows
Defender. Without Microsoft Update (which updates other Microsoft Office
products) Windows Defender works without error.

Not an ideal solution, but it will do for now. Hopefully Microsoft will fix
this in due course.

Let me start off by saying that I was seeing the error code referenced above
and had downloaded all available updates and even followed the
troubleshooting tips offered at the link in Windows Defender. I am also
running a genuine copy of Vista Home Premium.

After reading the information in wwp1848's post, I turned of my Windows
Updates and exited out of the Windows Update utiliy after reading many
well-intentioned warnings about running without updates turned on. I then
went back into Windows Updates and turned them back on. To my surprise,
Windows Update was now telling me that I had never checked for any updates
and, surprise, surprise, there was one available and, by gosh, it was a
Windows Defender definition update!

I downloaded and installed the definition update successfully. After that, I
exited out of Windows Defender then restarted the application. To my shock
and amazement, the application said it was running normally - reassuring
green shield and check mark and everything. I then immediately checked for
new updates. The Windows Defender "checking for updates" balloon displayed
and said it was checking, then another balloon saying "no new updates are
available for Windows Defender" was displayed - still had the reassuring
green icons, no errors.

It appears that, for the time being, Windows Defender is functioning
normally. To sum up for those of you who might want to try this rather simple
set of steps:

1. Exit out of Windows Defender.
2. Turn off Windows Updates.
3. Exit out of the Windows Updates utility.
4. Turn Windows Updates back on.
5. Check for updates. Hopefully, there will be one for Windows Defender.
6. Install the Windows Defender update (if one exists for you).
7. Set Windows Update to check automatically then exit out of Windows Update.
8. Restart Windows Defender.
9. Check for updates.

Hopefully this will help somebody else out. As we all know, with Windows
issues, your mileage may vary.

Good luck.

Okay so this didn't work for me. Vista has installed updates about a week
ago, and I turned off the automatic updates and security center said updates
were off. I closed, restarted, searched and no updates were available and i
still suffer from 80240029. Does anyone know of any other fixes? Thanks guys.

Ric;
Can you confirm your running Windows update as opposed to Microsoft update?
There was a post that indicated that the problem was seen when running
Microsoft update and switching back to Windows update then doing the steps
that Rich outline resolved this issue. Thanks.

Dave It worked ... My god you guys are good thank you all so much.

One more thing. what do you all think about this Vista? And why is this
Windows live one care being such a pain?

Thanks..

OK... great so the situation was resolved simply by switching back to
Windows Update from Ms Update and then running Rich's prescription right?
If that's the case you'll have to keep Office updated outside the Microsoft
update process if you're using it.

Sorry I've never even seen Vista... lol. Happy as a clam on XP still, but
I did respond to your WLOC thread on another post.

I just wanted to let you know Rich, that this workaround made all the
difference in the world. My Defender is working "normally" now.
Thanx again
