I purchesed a Packard Bell with Vista Premium installed in Feb 2007. I am
unable to get Windows Defender to update and i receive the above error
message. I cannot install the new version as it tells me that I already have
Defender pre installed. I have tried searching the knowledge base and
checking that the updater wuaucpl.cpl is running but my pc advises that this
does not exist. I am lost as to what to do? Please can anybody help........

I fixed the problem on my computer by going to the Control Panel, System and
Maintenance, System page. By the Product ID, I clicked on Change Product
Key. I typed in the product key from the side of my computer and once again
activated Vista. After that, I could download the updated file definitions.

Sarah: I hope this works for you. It has for me, and may others.

1. Exit out of Windows Defender.
2. Turn off Windows Updates.
3. Exit out of the Windows Updates utility.
4. Turn Windows Updates back on.
5. Check for updates. Hopefully, there will be one for Windows Defender.
6. Install the Windows Defender update (if one exists for you).
7. Set Windows Update to check automatically then exit out of Windows Update.
8. Restart Windows Defender.
9. Check for updates.

Hopefully this will help somebody else out. As we all know, with Windows
issues, your mileage may vary.

Good luck.
