I'll leave the reason to a Vista expert. ;)

This is strange! My software are all from HP since all software are OEM! My
model is Compaq Presario V3000 series!

I suppose it's possible that HP didn't update their distribution package.
Please click "Help" | "About" and give us your version.

OK...that's progress! :)

Are you running as administrator?

Select "Tools" | Options
Scroll down to the bottom option.
Is the option to "Allow everyone to use Windows Defender" selected?

Are you running Live OneCare?

I haven't seen Vista, but I suspect WD is updated via Microsoft Update. Now
I had best leave the Vista details to those who know. <g>

Chris - I suspect that you will be just fine. I haven't checked out your
error message, nor can I tell you the current Defender version on Vista,
which may be different from the one on XP--if it would help, I can check
that for you.

However, I've just spent a day checking a small office for various kinds of
updates, and there are some generalizations I can make that may help:

Defender may well be updating in the background already. If this is
happening, or if AutoUpdate is bringing in other updates, or if a manual run
to Windows or Microsoft Update is happening, you may get a similar error
message.

Basically, when I see this message, I either check back again
shortly--possibly just close and reopen the GUI to see whether the defs have
updated, or I go in via Windows Update and accept any Windows Defender
updates offered. There are very few resistant update problems these days,
and even those are usually cured by removing the current definitions in
place and letting the update mechanism start over from scratch.

Now that you've updated manually, I suspect that you'll have no further
issues.

So--when you went to Windows Update--you were not offered Defender updates?
That would either indicate that WU saw that you were already up to
date--possibly the update was in progress--or, that it didn't see Defender
as installed (or, in the case of Vista, turned on---not sure whether defs
are offered on Vista if the app is turned off. I think not.

Hi Bill. This is impossible because when I first open the PC and update my
WD, it seem it dont work well and that is before I update manually! Usually
when there is no updates, a message will display out and not "WD cant check
updates". This is rather shock! In Vista, when I went to Windows Update as
from the start menu, there listed that I had the latest updates available so
I suppose that means that my WD is update as well.

But this is not the case! My WD remains outdated with engine number
V1.00.000 etc. So when I stumbled across the manual, I just manually
installed it. I would prefer not to install it manually because I dont know
where or when updates are available and would rather rely on the update
function in Windows Defender! But until now, it seem that my WD still have
the problem and I intend to find a solution to it. Its rather difficult to
solve this issue indeed as Microsoft Knowledge Base had no relevant solutions
provided at the level of Vista!

Do you have anymore solutions?

There has been another timely update since you previously mentioned you had
run Microsoft Update.

Current info:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2101.0
Definition Version: 1.15.2233.6
Product ID: 81664-830-9262522-04101

Please try Microsoft Update again and let us know the result.

I've found the Vista Windows Update mechanism slightly confusing: When you
open the UI, it immediately tells you either that you are current, or that
there are updates waiting. I'm not clear how "current" this information is,
and I've been using the left-column option to check for updates routinely to
make sure that information is current before I go ahead and install based on
what I see there.

I believe that in Vista, as well as in XP, if you choose the update
mechanism within the app, it will give two balloons--the first says that it
is connecting to the Internet to check whether definitions are available,
and the second gives results--either "now up to date" or "can't reach the
server", or "no updates are available.:" (paraphrased!)

I would expect you to that that last result--no further updates, if you
invoke updates within the program at this point--help, check for updates, I
think.

Hi Bill and Bob;

As a matter of fact, I still now able to update the definition files with
the same error occuring again and again.

As for Bill, I indeed have two ballons but the description you provide is
different from mine! My first balloon is something like "new definition files
will be downloaded and automatically installed". My second balloon says "The
program cant check for updates". I wonder what is causing this!

So may I know if any of you got any thought on this? I really trouble by
this error message!

Just a suggestion, but is your firewall allowing Defender out to check for
updates? You may have to allow MSASCui.exe through the firewall to get
updates.

Hi Kkaiser1; my system came preinstalled with Norton Internet Security and I
had disabled it and then proceed with the update of the program but it seem
error still poping up saying it cant be updated with the error code mention
in the first post! I try reinstall it but also to no avail as a message
saying it had already been incorporated in Vista so discontinue my
installation.

So is there any one had a view or suggestions on my problem?

You stated above that Windows Update didn't show any updates. What if you try
Microsoft Update?

Hi !

I bought a computer with Vista Ultimate OEM.

A couple of days ago I recieved the error 0x80240029 which means my version
of Windows is a fake!? (BTW, Vista feels very much like a BETA product).

Windows Defender:
Windows Defender-version: 1.1.1505.0
Engineversion: 1.1.2101.0
Definitions: 1.15.2233.6

In Windows Update, I choose to check for updates. None available.

The way I solved this problem, go to Control Panel, and Windows Update.
Change settings. Set that it should not update automatically. Deselect the
checkboxes as well. Then make a manual scan for updates and you should see
updates that previously wasn't there.

Good luck.
