Windows Defender Update Failed

Updating Windows Defender via automatic updates failed so I tried to install
the update via the Windows Defender program itself (by using the Check for
Updates button) and I recieve the strange following error message ' Windows
Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80240022. The wrong diskette is
in the drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number: %3) into drive %1.' What does
this message mean?

I'd recommend ignoring that one for the time being. If you go to Windows
Update, do an express scan, and accept all offered updates, does that help?

Using express scan to update Windows Defender also failed - I think it
creates a file
named SigStub (Microsoft Malware Protection Signature Update Stub) size
17.3kb on my PC but the update fails each time.

Automatic updated failed again , both using DefenderAbout and Windows
Updates. Did the update using Resolution on KB 915105 and Run
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
Will wait for next update, maybe Microsoft will correct the issue.

I don't figure that they (MS) can figure it out. I've had to use the Msiexec
thighie for about 1 month now. I just run it first before updating, after
checking if an update is available from the "forums". This seems to be the
only update that you have to turn on auto update for MS Update in order to
get it. Guess they are trying to force Auto Update down our thorats.
"Express" does not work, nor does the "Custom" button. This seems to be the
only update that will never install no matter what you do. Personally, I am
not turning on auto update cause I want to know what is going to be updated
on my systen. Windows Xp SP2 Pro, all updates up to date, no virus, spyware,
or adware on the system, nor Registry problems. So whats"s next MS? Any ideas
yet? I've already done the CCleaner, reinstallled WD, did the Installation
Cleanup Utility, also Dial-A-Fix, also backed out from the Html issue
addressed with Dial-A-Fix. There are a whole lot of posts on this forum with
"Unable to Update". Why not try and delete your own signiture file before
updating? I like to test beta's but this is pretty bad. Sad in fact!

I'm seeing that error myself tonight. I think there's more than one
possibility for the root cause, though.
so--first, I am trying KB 915105's resolution steps:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

No help--same result.

Tried a repair install--which complained that I had deleted the installation
source (I think accurately!)

So--Start, control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, Change,
Update.

That, followed by a visit to Windows Update, express scan, apply
everything--is what worked.

Bill I tried you solution (Add/Remove programs, Windows Defender, Change,
Update - then express scan - but my update failed - when I try to use
express or cutsom scan to install, it states update has already been
downloaded and is ready to install - but when I try to insall, installation
fails.

I tried Bill's repair solution and it found the previous download and
reinstalled ok, but the result was the same, ie, definitions cannot be
updated. Had to completely uninstall and download and install the current
version. I did not note the previous version number I had, but now I have
Application 1.1.1347.0 and engine 1.1.1372.0 and it's working. Bill's
"repair" may have actually been a new download since he said he may have
deleted the original installation source.

Have there been any application or engine updates in the last few months??

There is a new UI code version in the last couple of weeks--so when you
pulled in a new version, you got new code, which has some update-related
fixes in it.

I was already running that code, however.

You can see this version in Help, about--the top number. The new code is
1347, the older one was 1051.

As Bob suggested in his post I removed Windows Defender and reinstalled new
version and update worked.

Thanks--this set of updates seems to involve some new challenges--I'm not
sure what's going on at this point. Glad you got yours resolved, anyway.
