I have a similar problem. Mine also states that an update is needed, but
after choosing the update function, it appears to download the update and the
popup windows does say I am u date, but then in the main program, it still
says I am out of of dat, and the icon in the try shows a warning as well.

I have the same problem with my machine as well. I've rebooted at least a
dozen times since installing (upgrading to) Windows Defender.

The icon in the systray has the red exclamation. When I open the window
there a shield with an exclamation and a bold message that reads:

Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 46 days.

I click the "Check for Updates", which causes a pop-up to appear above the
systray icon which reads:

Windows Defender is connecting to the Internet to acquire new definitions
and engine upgrades.

After about 10 seconds, the text changes to:

Windows Defender found no new definitions or engine updates available.

I've done this a few times every day since installing it about a week ago.
Same results every time.

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1185.0
Signature Version: 1.0.0.0

That's the same messege. I have uninstalled, cleaned the registry, rebooted,
reinstalled and get the same messege. So I uninstalle competely again since I
cannot rely upon it. I installed XoftSpy, ran it and actually found a few
problems, so be careful, you may not be fully protected.

Hello Mrugen,

XsoftSpy is a scanner, but WD give realtime protection!!!
A big difference! So i should try to install WD again or Spysweeper for
realtime protection.

Yes, I know, it is a scanner and WD is real time. I tried reinstalling etc
and could never get it to update again, so I'm just saying Xoftspy is better
than nothing. I used WebRoot spysweeper and it works great! Probably will
renew my subscription now until WD gets fixed then maybe try again depending

Auto update is enabled. However my windows manual update cannot download
genuine windows ? or something like that. All other updates are downloaded
automatically.

Had the same problem!

Solution:
Go to windows update there is a high-priority update for windows defender
that resolves the issue.

I had the same issue. the problem was that my firewall was blocking the
windows automatic updates, I had to turn my firewall off to get the update,
funny thing my firewall did not enter the block in the log and it took me
forever to figure out.
