Windows 2000 - Windows Explorer and IE Errors on Startup

2. Problems Encountered:

1. Problem with Windows Explorer - This happens every
time I try to start Windows.

Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created.

Once the error log is created it restarts Windows, but
Explorer is still not working. If you try to bring up
Windows Explorer or Control Panel it starts the whole error
process all over again.

From Event Viewer

Source Winlogon
Event ID: 1002

Description:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Steps taken to resolve the problem:

1. Ran Windows Update - Rebooted System
2. Ran Virus Scan with Norton Antivirus - No viruses detected
3. Downloaded and installed Windows 2000, Service Pack 4 -
Rebooted System
4. Reinstalled Explorer.exe application after stopping the
process - Rebooted System
5. Turned off Norton AV Real-time virus protection -
Rebooted System

All steps still yield the same results above. I am at wits
end to come up with a fix.

2. Problems with Internet Explorer 6 SP1

Every time I try to start IE6, it gives me the following:

Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the convenience. It then
gives you choices to either Send Error Report or Don't Send
Plus a check box to Restart Internet Explorer.

I have to Send Error Report in order to get rid of the box
and uncheck the restart.

From Event Viewer:

Descripiton:
The description for EventID (1000) in Source (Microsoft
Internet Explorer) cannot be found. The local computer may
not have the necessary registry information or message DLL
files to display messages from a remote computer. The
following information is part of the event: iexplore.exe, 6
..0.2800.1106, vx2.dll, 0.3.0.6, 0000eeea.

Steps taken to resolve this problem:

1. Restarted it several times.
2. Downloaded IE6, SP1 and reloaded - Rebooted System

Even with the reload, it still comes up with an error.

What the heck is vx2.dll? Where is that? Right-click choose Properties | Version tab. Who holds the copyright?

Hi Russell,

First, since there is no indication to a specific file that is corrupted we
must assume that
this is a DLL mismatch to IE 6 SP1.

This is caused by, strangely enough, Internet Explorer.
Since IE is now so integrated into the browser there is a specific DLL that
has not been correctly
registered in either Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer.

This is how we fix this.

Mark,

Thank you, for posting a reply to my message.
Unfortunately, I did not receive your reply before I
tried to do some other fixes on my own, and I am not
unable to try your fix.

Basically, the fixes were the unloading of additional
application programs in hopes at relieving some of the
resources be used, by such programs as DateManager,
Precision Time, Proxomitron (Anti-PopUp), Norton AV and
Client Firewall, etc. As stated earlier, that with the
Windows Explorer function not working, I was unable to
get to Add/Remove Programs via Control Panel. Therefore
I was able to delete these resident programs by going to
Start> Programs> and right-mouse clicking on the ones I
wanted to delete and it gave me access to Add/Remove
Programs. I deferred restarting the computer after some
of removals until I had them all finished, however, upon
restart I tried to deinstall IE6 SP1 and it appeared to
start the process, but when it asked for a restart it
came up with the following Blue Screen during the startup
of Windows 2000

Error while starting Windows 2000

STOP: c 0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\%SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate

It is corrupt, absent, or not writable

No matter how many reboots I tried, the same
error pops up during the start of Windows 2000. I then
tried booting from my Windows 2000 CD and selected
Repair, from Console and it gave me the following DOS
prompt:

C:\winnt

I proceeded to cd to c\winnt\System32
\Config\SOFTWARE and I cannot find any files in SOFTWARE
if it is a directory nor can I list the contents if it is
file. I do not have an Emergency Repair Disk at this
time.

Do you have any suggestions on what the contents
of SOFTWARE should be, and if there is anyway to populate
it prior to giving up and reinstalling Windows 2000?

Also, Back to the original problem: Prior to Internet
Explorer having problems that made it close and want to
send an error report to Microsoft which resulted in me
downloading IE6 SP1 to repair/update my Internet
Explorer - my wife and I use Microsoft Global IME in
order for my wife who is Japanese to input Japanese
characters into the search engines-- we had some problems
where IME would just stop running and I had to reload it
twice a couple of months ago.

To make this a bit clearer. Before we had a problem that
made Internet Explorer crash and burn, we noticed that
Global IME would work for awhile and then it seemed like
it would autohide itself, and we would not be able to see
it. I in the end had to deinstall it and then reinstall
it. Has there been any known problems between IE and
Global IME that could have caused my original IE 6 to
fail?

Just prior to IE's crash, my wife's work process (She is
making Japanese/English Flash Cards for teaching), she
opens MS Word, uses Global IME to add the Japanese
Characters, and then opens Internet Explorer to download
pictures from various sites (Japanese and English) to
represent the word she is making.
However, prior to IE's crash, it took a long time to open
Word and sometimes Internet Explorer would open but be
blank causing her to eventually go to TASK MANAGER to end
task in order to unfreeze her system. Not sure if this
makes sense, but is it possible that IE has a problem
working with Global IME?

Thanks again for your help,

Russ Zimmer

P.S. I tried posting this to the community page last
night, but it would not open for me to post.

Mark,

I was able to restore my SOFTWARE file (see later
notes) from the repair directory, but after getting
Windows 2000 backup and running, and running your registry
script it still did not fix my problem. So, I ended up
reinstalling a fresh copy of Win2K, but I am a bit afraid
to install IE6 SP1. Right now, I am sticking with IE 5
SP1 that came with my W2K cd.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Russ Zimmer

Hi Russell,
This issue with the Japanese IME is found when we have installed the Office
IME and also
have the System Global IME install using MUI.

The recommendation is that these 2 types of IME's conflict if they are both
installed.
To resolve this we can uninstall the Japanese Office IME and leverage only
the system IME
to resolve this contention.

Please let us know.
Thanks
