Windows 2000 pagefile too small

Help!

Upon W2k start-up and entering my login details I
immediately get an error approximating too...

'Windows pagefile missing or too small please increase or
create a new pagefile in control panel, system performance
advanced bla bla..."

However at this point windows begins to save its settings
and prompts me to re-login again and the cycle begins
again I re-enter my login details etc.... So I can never
get into windows to follow the advice given....

So far I have tried:

-Clearing diskspace - in case there was'nt enough to re-
create the page/swap file: 5gb+ now spare!

-Defragmenting the disk - lots of contiguous space now!

-Run Scandisk - to Check the disk for any corruptions

-Manually creating a mock pagefile.sys in c:\ & c:\winnt

-logging in as different users and the local administrator
in case there was a file permissions problem...

-Starting up in 'safe mode' - same errors persists!

-Started W2k Recovery Manager - So useful options/tools
found there(looked at KB Articles 140472, 812448 no help!)

In all cases whether there is a dummy(copied from another
Win2k machine) or not pagefile.sys present I get the same
error and don’t seem to be able to get beyond the login
cycle to affect any progress...

If any of you knowledgeable folks could shed any light on
this I would certainly appreciate it! By the way I'm
running(or was running!) W2k professional SP4 on an IBM
Thinkpad A series with 512mb ram and a 32gb disk...

Thanks in advance!

Can you connect the machine to a network?
