Windows 2000 Installation

Hopefully someone can help me out on this one:
I am forced to install Windows 2000 Pro on a system, but since it is no
longer possible to buy this software package I had to buy Windows XP Pro. The
reseller told me that it was legal to install an earlier Windows release
(Windows 2000). But he could not tell me what to do with the Product Key.
Hopefully one of you can give me a appropriate answer. Is it legal to install
Windows 2000 after buying Windows XP? Is it legal to use a public known
Product Key for Windows 2000 when you have a legal Windows XP key glued onto
the system?

Not all WinXP Pro licenses are downgradeable. Only OEM and the
Select/Open Volume licenses can be downgraded. Further the WinXP
license remains a _single_ license: you can use it for its original
WinXP installation, or you can use it, if it meets the other
requirements, Win2K Pro.

ok, this sounds good...but what about the product installation key I need to
use...obviously the XP won't work during the 2K installation.
Any idea what Microsoft suggests fot that?
