win xp installer or updater

Hello all,
I can not get the windows installer to work for some reason I am running
win xp pro sp2 with all updates until last month, then the installer quite
working, I have tried to install the windows installer 3.1 and it installs
OK but the windows update still will not work. Does anyone have any
ideas????? Also when I restart the computer I get a window asking for the
office 2003 pro cd to download a file MAINSP1ff.msp or something like that
but when I put the cd in the computer it says that no such file is on the
cd??? Thank you all for the help and foe your time

Office has been having these issue for a great time now. I have a
workaround for the msi but this is a new one to me as I don't really focus
on Office edits day to day. That said:

"Every time I launch my application, Windows Installer performs an

Added info:

The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you
are running in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed.

Windows Installer Fix (Line 94)

Go to Start/Run and type in:
msiexec /unregister [click ok]

Then Start/Run and type in:
msiexec /regserver [click ok]
