Odd, installed W2K/W2K Server, XP, Server 2003 on many different hardware
platforms and problems were rare. But I wouldn't chalk my install problems
up to a global Windows blows chunks because it really doesn't. Windows can
be and is useful in some cases. I keep it around for A/V work since linux
doesn't support the proprietary hardware I use for I/O. And I don't expect
it to for very logical and understandable reasons.

Aw, I was pissed. But today it took me a half an hour to write an e-mail
message, since I wanted to include some pics from the web. Major slowdown!
I had a 286 running Windows 3 that ran faster! WYF?!?! Then I looked and
Automatic Upgrade was running at about 85% and hosing the whole system
down! I cancelled and shut Automatic off and it ran much better after that.

Yeah, I know what you mean about hardware. NONE of the three scanners I
bought (at the Salvation Army for not more than $20 in near new condition)
works with SANE.

I like Linux, and use it more often, but in a few places it falls on it's
face (because for the most part hardware vendors don't support it...) but
for most things it's pretty good. The only other place it really falls
down is Multimedia. I can't play any flash because Adobe doesn't have a 64
Bit Linux version, and some videos (esp those with Indeo) don't play.

Gee, 4 different versions of Linux installed on it just fine, the last one
just last week, "Hamfisted" overclocking and all. XP just can't take the
OC, like other, more robust Op Systems do, I guess.

I had WIN2K OC'd on a 32 bit machine from 1.8G to 2.2G No Problem. Made
the upgrade to XP without changing speed No Problem. Seven minutes into
the first boot...lockup!

Let's see...Linux installs and runs No Problem. Windows 2K installed

I'm sorry, Up Your What?

BWAHAHAHA!!! I'm a Novell Certified Netware Engineer, MSCE and A+
Certified. I've been reparing computers, installing OP SYSs and setting up

Novell.

And I know a Crummy OS when I see one. Why do you think I was installing
XP and not Vista.

So, after almost a year of running numreous versions of Linux Overclocked,
I forgot XP can't handle it. Big Fat Hairy Deal.

Your woes with installing an OS on an overclocked system strongly
suggest the system is unstable, is that not apparent? I just built a
new system for a client and the memory sticks would pass memtest86 and
memtest+ but installing the OS failed. I found out the brand new
Corsair Valueram had serious problems running in a dual channel setup,
and in fact, would not work at CAS 2.5, even tho the SPD data was
setup for CAS2.5. Had to run the sticks at CAS 3.0 to achieve
stability. I RMA'd the memory after discovering this problem.

Burn yourself a copy of Ultimate Boot CD and run the memory tests
overnight then run prime95 overnight, if the system gets through those
test phases THEN you may consider the system possibly stable. I
installed and ran Linux (Redhat 5.x) on a machine for some time before
discovering I had a bad ram stick. I was rather amazed that Linux not
only installed but did not crash. Window's use of memory is quite
different from Linux and may account for the differences you are
seeing. I seem to recall Windows will use memory from the top down,
but that may have been a win9x "feature".

YEs, yes, now that I recall I ran into this 'problem' once before a couple
years ago. I had Kingston 256 HyperX installed and it was running Linux
just fine. Funny thing is, it was running Windows 2000 just fine, too, but
when I installed XP it crashed on reboot. On that system memory was
clocked with the CPU, so when I backed down the CPU clock, it ran fine. So
I would OC to run Linux, and go to defaults to run XP.

And, this is a different system, but I still have the HyperX from the old
system...I added another 256M stick and two 512M sticks, to keep the dual
channel running.

You probably hit the nail on the head with the way Linux and Windows
differ in their memory handling. I'll have to look at my timings, but I
have another XP drive set up that runs OK. Every once in a while one app
or another causes a crash, but for the most part it runs stable at the
same speed as Linux. But I forgot about the OC causing errors during
installation...
