Why is MS update so slow?

If I start MS update, then windows update, then office update. The
second two respond with appropriate updates very fast while MS update is
still checking. In other words MS update is very slow compared to what
it replaces. Once MS update took 15 miuntes to tell me neither office
nor windows needed anything, while the two other updates came up with
the answer immediately.

probably because that database is accessed far more often than the Office
updates etc. (and contains more info)
