Why Don't IE 6.0,SP1 and Flash Player Work?

System has:
Windows 98
IE 6.0,SP1 (works great with Win98 until now)
Latest version of Shockwave Player
Latest version of Sun Java Virtual Machine (Java2 Runtime Environment SE[?])

Visited legitimate website which prompted me to load and install current
version of Flash Player. After installation, IE crashes on loading Flash
equipped webpage. It offers to send a report to Microsoft. It offers to
auto-restart. That's it. Never had this problem before. Only with Flash 7
and, now, after experimenting further, Flash 6.

Have tried all known install options (auto from Macromedia's website and
downloaded stand-alone). Have tried all known uninstall options including
Macromedia removal tools and a procedure seen in a Microsoft KB article on a
similar problem.

Have Norton AV, Ad Aware, and Spybot, defs for all three current. Scan
regularly. Macromedia tech support has only told me to do the things I have
already tried.

Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

Just download Flash and Shockwave Standalone installers from here, install
them and see if that helps:
