flash play will not download in IE 6.0

I have read numerous posts on this, but still have not found a
solution. I normally use Firefox, but sometimes need IE for Flash
files. When i go to the macromedia Flash player download site I get
the same red X encased within a box that other users have seen and see
no DOWNLOAD window. i have been able to download and supposedly
install Flash 6 and 7 installers from other sites, but nothing works.
i do not see it listed under 'flash 'or 'macromedia' within add/remove
programs either.

I have read and followed suggestions from the the following posts with
no avail:

If you have Norton Personal Firewall Go to Configure Security Settings>Ad
Blocking>Advanced>and go to the Global Settings Tab. At the bottom, there is
a Flash Animations option. Click on 'Permit'. Do the same with the User
Settings Tab.

Then, for good measure, cliac on "Add Site" in the bottom left of the same
window. Once you add a certain site, you will be given the option to Block
or Permit that site. Good Luck!
