What is the best way to make content impactful in PowerPoint?

What makes one slide better than another? Outside of the presentor, what
should be done to make a great presentation in PowerPoint? The feedback I
have recievd is that while my presentations are not eye charts, they lack
that WOW factor and use text too heavily. There is a lot of information on
how to present and secrets to make a great presentation, but I can't find
anything that deals with making a better deck for the presentation.

My $.03 worth.

PowerPoint is a visual medium, USE VISUALS! Instead of charts and text,
seek images that convey the same meaning.

Keep text to a minimum. I like the old 5x5 rule. No more than 5 lines of
text, no more than 5 words in each line.

Do NOT use "golly gee" animations with text regardless of how tempting.
(Unless your audience is a group of grade school aged kids.)

Settle on a font and use it through the entire presentation. You may need
to alter its size but use a single font throughout.

Once the presentation is done, look at it carefully to see how many slides
you can delete. (I find that in a 10 slide presentation I can usually get
rid of 3 or 4.)

I think the most important issue is, know who your audience is. A
presentation for say road construction workers might be very different than
one for a group of brain surgeons.
