what is an upsidedown "L" symbol between syllables in a word?

When I type a document a symbol like an upsidedown "L" appears occasionally
between syllables in a word. It doesn't show up in the printed page. How
can I avoid this symbol?

Hit Insert-->Symbol and look in the special characters tab. You'll see that
it's an optional hyphen. If this word is near the end of a line on the page,
it could hyphenate it at that point.
