What does this mean: extend.dat - file may not exist?

My computer crashed. I recover almost everything, except Outlook. I am
getting 2 messages:
Extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: extend.dat File may not
exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may be open n another
program.
(Nothing else is open!) AND:

Unabl to open your default email folder. File access is denied. You do not
have permission to access

search for and delete extend.dat - outlook will recreate it. How did you
recover your system?

OK, I am no longer getting the "extend.dat" message. Hower, I still cannot
open Outlook. I first used software called "Recover My Files". Later, I used
the Microsoft Office 2003 Professional to repair. I am the only user, logged
in as administrator. However, I am showing 2 users: GYoung and
GYoung.REVYOUNG. I am not sure how I got the 2nd one but it is apparently
where my Outook now resides. The message I now get is "Unable to open your
default email folder. File access is denied. You do not have permission
required to access the file C:\Documents and Settings\GYoung.REVYOUNG\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst."

Can you help me?

Sounds like you are no longer the owner of your %UserProfile% folder tree.
How did you recover? Did you have to recreate the Windows user?

If this were to happen to me (and it has), I'd log in as Administrator, make
a copy of the user folder tree I wanted to keep, remove the user causing
trouble (letting Windows delete the files), create the user again, and log
in as that user, allowing Windows to recreate the profile folder tree. I'd
then go back to the Administrator account and copy the contents of the
folder tree I saved into the new profile folder tree, not replacing any file
that already existed in the new profile tree, but just adding files.

Brian, the problem with that is GYoung, Administrator is the only user that
shows in User Accounts. When I previously tried to remove the extra user in
Explorer, I am not allowed to remove the files because it "... is a Windows
system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be
deleted."

No, I did not recreate the Windows user.

DId you set this computer up? If so, you may remember the setup asking for
a password for the Administrator account. This is the one I mean and it's
available only in Safe mode.

I was on a server; I asked to be removed from the server. Once that was done,
I could no longer open the computer, because it did not recognize my
password. Then, the individual found a set of instructions that opened
Windows by bypassing the password. I went in and renamed myself as GYoung,
Administrator - which is what it was previously. However, once I got into the
computer all of my files, settings, etc. were no longer on the computer.
That's when I purchased "Recover My Files" software and retrieved the files.
I know, I am not very computer saavy and there may have been a better way but
these are the steps that I took. When I saw there were 2 users in Explorer I
tried to manually remove the 2nd one and that brings me to the questions I
have posed on this forum. I probably deleted something that I should not
have. I still would like to only have 1 user and be able to open and use
Outlook as it is preferable to using Webmail.

So, nothing crashed. You've just mangled your Windows configuration. You'd
be better off asking in a Windows newsgrup.
