way to little RAM

Hi again Group,

I just put in 2 x 512 MB RAM into my XP Pro (AMD 2500) computer. Now my
"system Properties" is telling me that I only have 448MB. What have I done
wrong? Help would be greatly appreciated

My GOD man - Learn to crosspost! This multiple posting is getting old FAST!

Did you make sure (manuals) that your computer (hardware) could handle that
much RAM?
If you did, did you verify the type/speed?
If you did, did you verify the placement?

Answered in another newsgroup. Please do not send the same
message separately to more than one newsgroup. Doing so just
fragments the thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup
doesn't get to see answers from others in another newsgroup.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup,
please do so by crossposting (but only to a *few* related
newsgroups).

This is most likely because you have an on-board video card(video on the
motherboard). All video cards need memory(ram) to work correctly. Better
video cards that are not on-board have their own memory. On-board cards need
to use the system memory since they don't have their own. I assume your
on-board card is 64 mb. So the card would take 64mb of your system memory to
run. 512 - 64 = 448.

And what happened to the other 512?

Note the OP said 2 x 512MB. =)

Geddy Lee:
Is it possible that one of your ram sticks hasn't been fully seated? With
the power off, completely remove both sticks. Replace them, making sure you
hear the click on both sides of the stick when the little plastic locks slam
into place. Once both sticks have been returned, power on the machine and
see if System Properties reports the correct amount of memory.

Opps, didn't notice the two 512. The second one is either seated
incorrectly, the wrong type of ram, too much ram, or bad ram. XP is picky
about cheap ram.

The system info tool has a bug on reporting multiple modules of RAM very
often. See what is shown if you go to Control Panel - System. It will
probably show 960; the other 64 being used as reserved memory by an
on-board video controller
