volume control

Hi,
Could somebody please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I had to do a system restore a few days ago. Since then, i have noticed that
there is no sound control. When I click Start, point to All Programs, point
to Accessories, point to Entertainment, there is no Volume Control. There is
also no sound icon in the task bar.
Any ideas on how to get the sound back. Someone did mention that I reload
the sound driver. I'm not hot on that, could someone point me in the right
direction?
Thanks
Andy

Try going to your control panel then to sounds and audio devices, there, make
sure
you have a check where it says "place volume icon in the taskbar"

Hi,
I have already tried that. When I check that box, this is what comes up;
"windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume
control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove
programs in the control panel."
When I went onto the Microsoft download centre, I can't find the proper
download. Yesterday, I actually contacted Microsoft by email asking their
advice. I was told that I did n't qualify for the free advice, as I had a
support contract with my supplier. Unfortunately for me, my supplier has went
bust.
Any ideas?
Thanks again all the way from Bonnie Scotland

I'm having a similar issue. I've tried re-installing SndVol32.exe the way it
was suggested under Q319095, but it still gives me that error message - and,
when I click on "Volume..." under the Audio tab, it gives me the error
message: "Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe. use Add/Remove Programs
control panel to install."

When I go to the Add/Remove Programs CP, and click "Add/Remove Windows
Components", it doesn't open.

I found the problem: It wasn't anything with sndvol32.exe itself; it was with
rundll32.exe.

Somehow, that program was corrupted and didn't recognize sndvol32.exe when I
tried to open it from the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel.

Easily fixed: instead of "expand sndvol32.ex_", as listed in Q319095, I
expanded a new copy of rundll32.exe from rundll32.ex_ in the (PATH):\i386
folder.

And just like that, my volume control icon is back in the taskbar. :)

Andy, did that last post solve your problem? I had the same problem with Win
98
I went to Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio and click on "Show Volume Control
in Task Bar. If that doesn't work you can reinstall it from the Windows CD
Rom Select E:\ drive and OK and install it. It worked for me. Good Luck :)

I managed to fix the issue by de-activating a startup item particular to my
machine.

GWMDMMSG.exe, which is a Modem Messaging application that Gateway uses for
its laptops, was causing my computer to lose track of the sound card. I
disabled the item from running at startup, then went back to the Sounds &
Audio Devices control panel and re-enabled my sound card. Everything's back
to normal.

Given how much difficulty I've had in the past with Microsoft's Messenger
programs, it doesn't surprise me that this one had issues as well.
