Vista spell check not working

G

Gary VanderMolen

Core user functions in all software should work smoothly,
but the sad fact is that often there are some glitches.
When a glitch does happen, the average user will probably
be lost, but a seasoned user knows to try things like toggling
a function on and off a couple of times.

To continue in the automotive metaphor vein, I'm talking
about knowing what to do when the car goes into a skid, as
opposed to learning the routine use of the brake and gas pedals.

I tried this procedure, but when I hit tools then spelling no options come
up. It goes straight into "this language is...."
I also tried on main windows mail page and when tools is hit spelling
doesn't even come up as an option!!!

Keep trying. "Spelling" is on the main screen under Tools, Options.

Hi Gary, Just another person who wants to say how much I appreciate you taking
the time to explain how to get the spell check to work. Note: I just
'stumbled' upon this discussion stuff, I'm brand new to how all this works,
we just got a computer this year! So, really, (in response/defense to that
"rich" guy)... You are correct in saying that experience (and I might add - a
little common sense)
helps ! thanks so much for sharing yours.

It doesn't spell check for me until I press the 'send' button. Then the
suggested corrections appear. I like the old way better but don't know if
it's possble with Windows Mail.

I agree with Rich McNamara.

I owned a software business for 18 years. It was very difficult to get the
programmers to correct errors resulting from the manner they used to program
something. Also, it was very difficult to get them to consider that they did
an incomplete job. This is the fault of the manager of the software group.
I can find no logical reason for the "Contacts" format in Windows Mail. You
should be able to select a group and select individuals from that group. Now,
the entire contacts folder is viewed when you want to create an email.
Totally unacceptable!!!

Changing names and moving the function somewhere else is not "development"
or "improvement". Making it easier with improved functionality is. I know
that idiots are very inventive. Programmers must not eliminate idiot users
and their methods, but must program so that anyone, even idiots, can use the
software. I cannot recommend Vista to anyone due to the myiad of problems
that have appeared when I updated. Formatting my HD and returning to XP is
the only solution that Microsoft offered. Also, not acceptable. I believe I
should have a reasonable expectation that functions in XP would be carried
over to Vista (like the fax console).

Fred, your right on. Its obvious that the MS programmers and their managers
are a bunch of nerds who have no inkling of what a customer is. Most of the
people that I know what to use computers as a tool and not as a job.
Vandermoelen is one of the bunch even though he eventually comes up with a
solution. I wish I could get back to OE as it was so much easier to use than
MAIL.

Gee.....I guess I didn't realize how difficult it was to properly program a
spelling check in such a strange language as English.
I may suggest that today's MS software Engineers examine the old fashioned
and clunky "Outlook Express" on the perfectly functioning Windows XP OS.
Maybe they can find a hint on how to set up a system properly.

Good Luck

Well, of course it should have been working properly when MS
released the software. But that philosophical discussion doesn't
help the user who just wants a fix or workaround. That's what this
forum is all about, not to waste time with useless finger pointing.

Outlook Express does not have a spelling checker. It has to come from
something else like an installation of Outlook before Outlook 2007. Windows
Mail comes with a spelling checker for U.S. English.

this may have already been suggested, but I just changed my settings so that
spell check is activated before every email goes out
