You had the right answer. Just checked the English box, wich it already
displayed, Clicked Apply and everything was OK.

I figured it out, go to your home mail page, go to tools, options, spelling
click on English then on apply.
It worked for me!

Thank you Gary,
When I went into the main menu in MAIL and then into Options, then Spelling.
- there was not anything I wanted to change, so I just clicked OK. When I
went back to my Compose - the spell check worked.
But it does not allow me to highlight a particular word for spell check, the
language thing comes up again.
Dont understand why they just did not leave it the old way rather than
confuse everybody!
Cheers

It would have been better if you clicked on English to highlight it,
then click Apply, then OK.

If Options does not appear under Tools, then you are in the wrong screen.
Go to the main Windows Mail screen, not the message compose screen.

(Side note: I really don't understand why people are having so much difficulty
finding this.)

The problem is that "spelling" DOES show up as an option- It just won't do
it. I am still search to widows Mail screen as you said- not an option on MY
computer ( Itried the way the promter told me- didn't work-

You tried choosing another language and clicking Apply and then choosing
English?

You could always invoke a spelling check from the compose screen,
but that's not where you make permanent setting changes.
OE and WinMail are the same in that regard.

Gary-

I did what you said, and it worked.

BTW, English was already checked.

I believe the reason people are having trouble with this, is that it is not
well explained.

The error message, does not say what you say, why would one assume they had
to go back to the main screen.

Good software, does not assume people know what to do, the fact that so many
people are having this problem means it is not clear.

Maybe MS should just have a link to your post, when it will not check
spelling:)

My assumption is that they will fix it, the MS User Debug Protocol ;)

Given unlimited resources and time, software can always be
made easier to use and understand.
But, people don't expect to be able to jump into a car at age 16
and drive perfectly immediately. That's what Driver's Ed is for.
Perhaps there should be a Driver's Ed for computers and
software too. In time, certain software conventions, techniques,
and shortcuts will become ingrained in the seasoned PC user.

does anyone else agree that the problem is one of microsofts making and that
the answer is in their hands?

I'm not sure that will get you anywhere and besides,
M$ are dealing with it by releasing a replacement for Windows Mail
in the coming week.

Fault-finding and finger-pointing is not the issue.
This forum is about using workarounds so that people can get on
with their productive lives.

I too had this issue with the error message "Language is no longer
available for spell checking. Please select another in the spelling
options dialoge".
and changed it to German then did the spell check (it
was written in English) and when I did the spell check it said the spelling
check was complete (indicating it was correct)! So I then changed the spell
check back to "English" and
misspelled words on purpose-it still said your spelling check is complete.
Any
other suggestions?

Go to main window
tab tools
then options
tab spelling
tick 'Always check spelling before sending'
apply and close
hey presto it works
