Vista Release Question

Does anyone know if both the 32 and 64-bit editions of vista will be packaged
together? I saw that Vista became available through Microsoft for pre-order
today, but none of the versions say whether they are 32 or 64-bit. Your
responses will be much apreciated.

Bother platforms 32 and 64 bit will be included in all editions of Vista
except Starter Edition on separate DVD disk with one product key (license).

Whether they are packaged together or not, you will not be able to use and
upgrade version to move from 86 to 64 or back. This will require a full
edition.

Are you absolutely sure that I will have to get the full version? I didn't
want to have to spend all of that extra money, but if you say that is what I
need, then I will take your word for it.

John Barnes

No guarantees. This was the latest I saw posted by a MSFT employee. So far
information on upgrade versions is sparse as upgrade versions have not been
made available to the normal testing groups. Also some who claim to have
access to upgrade versions claim different functions than MSFT employees
posting as such.

Personally, since Colin has indicated he will be buying an upgrade version
as soon as it is available, I will wait until he posts back. That would be
the most reliable source. Hopefully he will confirm the 64 - 32 bit
implications.

"Bother platforms" -- what does that mean?.
If you mean 'both' you are wrong. You'll have to send that Acer laptop back
at this rate.

You said that a clean install is the only way to go, but is there an option
for a clean install on the upgrade disk or will I have to buy the full
version?

There is no way to upgrade any 32-bit operating system to a 64-bit version
of Vista. It cannot be done. If you want to go to 64-bit then a clean
install is your only option.

There is no upgrade path from x86 to x64. x86 to x64 is not an upgrade. It
is a migration. The two are different platforms.

While we have confirmation that both the x86 and x64 dvd's are packaged in
the retail full editions, we do not have confirmation that retail upgrade
editions contain anything but the x86 dvs's. Even if the x64 dvd is
included in the upgrade package it would only work with XP Pro x64 because
the Vista upgrade Setup has to run from the desktop of the legacy OS and you
cannot run the 64bit installer on a 32bit desktop.

The two options are "upgrade" and "custom." There is no "clean" install
option. "Clean install" is merely a concept. A classic clean installation
involves formatting the hard drive and starting over. You cannot do this
with an upgrade edition Setup. An upgrade edition Setup must be run from
the desktop of the system being upgraded. You can format prior to running
Setup by booting with the dvd and using the tools available that way, but
then there would be no legacy OS to run in order to launch the Vista upgrade
edition Setup program.

The short answer is, if you are running a 32bit edition of Win2k or XP, you
cannot take advantage of upgrade pricing to migrate from 32bit Windows to
64bit Vista. The only folks who can take advantage of upgrade pricing when
installing 64bit Vista are those who are presently running XP Pro x64.

as far as I know, at least since the Windows 3.1 days, an "Upgrade" version
of Windows can be installed clean. it may ask you to put in your old disc to
verify you have an older version of Windows, but it does not require it to
be installed.

As far as I am aware, Microsoft has not made any
official announcement. That's the real problem. You'd
think that by now we'd know exactly what the deal was.

A couple of posters in this group called their local Microsoft offices (one
I know was in England) and confirmed that the retail full edition boxes do
indeed contain both dvd's. Darrel Gorter (MSFT) also confirmed in this
group that the retail full editions contain both dvd's. I am not assuming
from that that the upgrade editions will contain both, however. They may
only contain the x86 dvd.

You can search this group on "Darrel Gorter" and find his response. This
was a couple of months ago.

Starting with Vista you can no longer install the OS with an upgrade edition
by booting with the dvd. If you enter an upgrade edition product key you
will be instructed to install from the desktop of the legacy OS running on
the computer. Vista upgrade editions do not ask for shiny media to verify
qualification for upgrade pricing.

John Barnes

That was in the X64 newsgroup, I believe. Here it is

Hello Colin,
I stand corrected Colin you are correct. It does appear they will ship
both 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs in the same box at least for Windows Ultimate.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

And the question remains, what happens if you don't enter a PK for the
initial install? Are you forced to enter a PK to install or will you have
the option to enter it after the system is completly loaded.
