Anybody have one that works with XP/SP3??
Thanks.

Two suggestions, follow the instructions below or download a trial
version of Vuescan http://www.hamrick.com/ and check that it works with
your scanner.

I copied this sometime ago and it worked with Vista and I would imagine
with W7 and backwards to XP. But this is the proceedure.

1. Download and install the 9420 driver. There were two choices on the
Visioneer website. It is the second, at the time I did this it was
called 85-0257-x00. It will download an .msi file called
"9420M.32.407629.msi".

2. Locate your 8920 files. Mine were located in
"C:\Windows\twain_32\vizscan\8xxx".

3.Copy the all 9420 files located from where they were installed in
"C:\Program Files\Visioneer\OneTouch 4.0\9420M Driver" or something
similar to the 8920 folder. (At the time I did this there were 8 files)

4. Now the fun begins. You will need to modify the .inf file labeled
"OT_9420M.inf". I was not able to do this without copying the file to a
separate library, modifying it, then copying it back.

5. In the OT_9420M.inf" file there are two lines that identify the
scanner. The code for a 9420 scanner is "038A" and it needs to be
changed to the code for the 8920 which is "0371". Change the 038A at the
end of these to lines 0371 and save the file back. These are the only
changes I made. The lines should now look like this:

[Models.NTamd64]
%OneTouchHAL.DeviceDesc%=OneTouchHAL.Scanner64, USB\Vid_0461&PID_0371
[Models]
%OneTouchHAL.DeviceDesc%=OneTouchHAL.Scanner, USB\Vid_0461&PID_0371

6: I then went to the Device Manager Screen under Imaging Devices, found
the Visioneer Scanner and updated the driver pointing to the
"C:\Windows\twain_32\vizscan\8xxx" library. The scanner was identified
and found. Be aware it will now show up in the device manager screen as
a 9420 scanner, but who cares if it works. I am not that much of a purest'

I make no guarantees this procedure will work for you, and if you are
unfamiliar with Windows be very careful to back up anything you modify
in case you need to go back. This procedure was created with the help of
several posts of people having problems using their old scanners with
Vista.
Thanks *very* much for the lengthy and detailed procedure. I see
that you have read between the lines and appreciate my situation.
With a system which is squeaky-clean, in that every trace of Visioneer,
ScanSoft, One Touch, and PaperPort have been removed, including from
Registry, the installation hangs at 98% of completion. I even tried an
old PaperPort 7.02 upgrade that doesn't help.

I think it is totally irresponsible that Visioneer will only talk about
an old product for two dollars a minute.

I'll print it out and study it. Thanks again.

BTW, if anybody has a newer Installation CD that they could loan out,
that might be easier than all of the above.

Reopening the subject. I WROTE to Visioneer and actually got an e-mail
answer, reading, in part:

"We just received your letter in the office today. I am sorry to hear
about the problems you have been having. I regret to inform you, your
Visioneer 8920 Scanner is not compatible w/ your operating system. The
last driver that was available for this unit was Windows XP, Service
Pack 1. It appears you are on Service Pack 3."

I tried all the above good ideas, but still can't make it play. I'm
going to blow a few bucks and pick up a unit that has a guarantee of
working with XP/SP3. Thanks to you all for the sincere efforts.
