My I open the Task Pane and select Slide Layout or Slide Design the Task
Pane is blank. How do I get the layouts and designs to show on the task
pane?

As you have guessed, this is not normal functionality.

I would try using the 'detect and repair' option on the PowerPoint help
menu.

Warren,
Would you go to Tools--> Options--> Edit tab and see if the any of the last
three boxes are checked? Specifically, I am guessing that the "Disable new
features" box is checked. If it is, uncheck it, close PPT, reopen PPT and
see if things work any better. (Oh - and let us know....)

Thanks for the suggestion but all the check boxes under "Disable new
features" are not checked.

To try to make PPT access the options, I checked an option the under
"Disable new features", closed PPT, opened PPT, the anomaly was still
present. I unchecked the option, closed PPT, opened PPT, and the anomaly
was still present.

Thanks for the suggestion. I closed PPT, opened PPT, and invoked "detect
and repair". I closed PPT, opened PPT, and the anomaly is still present.

I think I'm having the same problem as you do.
Slide Layout or Slide Design does not show anything on the Task Pane except
when you move your mouse pointer over it, it shows outline of boxes present
there.
Have you got it working yet?
