Using an XP Pro Server

Hi!

I have recently invested in a wireless router (like every1 else in the world
hehe).
I have 3 PC's on the network, 1 notebook and 2 desktop. Here are some brief
specs:

notebook: Mobile pentium/512 DDR333/40gig HDD etc/XP-pro

Desktop 1: AMD XP1900+/768 DDR266/80 gig HDDx2/Ti4200/XP-pro

Desktop 2: [email protected]/1024 DDR500/80 gig HDDx2/x800xt pe

My Question is this:

If I was to load all of my applications onto the Desktop 1 PC and then put
shortcuts to the games on Desktop 2,
would I effectively get 'more' from my Desktop 2 PC?

Not really. What you will get is additional space. Applications installed
on Desktop X will not be seen as installed on Desktop Y. This normally
means that they will not be able to find files or registry entries needed to
start and run. You can try it, but most apps that have files outside of
their install folders or registry references will not run properly, if at
all.

If you install on Desktop Y as well, referencing the (mapped) install
folders on desktop X, the apps may run (after installing files and registry
entries on Desktop Y). However, expect sluggish performance as you will be
accessing the remote drives over a fairly low-speed link.

One thing you will also not get is full multiprocessor use; the use of the
remote machine's processing capabilities will be limited to drive access.
Only specially written apps can use processors over several machines.

You might like this setup? ;)

I assume DT2 is Xp Pro also.

Put apps on DT1.
Games on DT2.

Hook up notebook to a large screen monitor as a secondary.
Arrage notebook stuff next to DT1.

Options.

1. Use DT1 for apps as normal.
Use Remote Desktop to connect to DT2 and play a game.

2. On one of those "I need to be alone." days,
take notbook to fav cubble hole and connect to both DT1 and 2. Minimise
sceens, put on glasses, and use all three at once. :)

It's fun, too! :)
Try it and let us know how the wireless rounter performs. That's a lot of
compress air. lol

thanks very much, between the 2 replies I think you've covered a lot of
options and filled in a lot of blanks for me.
