Username and password fields gray

Over the past few months I have seen a couple of cases where, when a PC is
locked (because of a GPO), the username and password fields are grayed out.
We can not login, restart or shut them down. Altiris' command line and power
tools won't even work. Does anyone have an idea what causes this and how to
prevent it? There is nothing in Event Viewer. Thanks.

Try starting in Safe Mode as Administrator.

Then try to locate and fix the problem.

Pull the plug if you have to.

I can't get into safe mode because the system is locked and will not allow
anything to be typed in.

I have absolutely no idea what may be causing the problem or how to prevent
it.

Are you certain that a password was set in Safe Mode? Did you try it?

The users are using domain based accounts, so no, passwords are created
samemode. It is not everytime either. I have seen it maybe 5 times.
Restarting seems to fix it, but the only way we can get it to restart is by
holding the power button or pulling the plug. There is nothing in the event
viewer. No application or system errors.
