log on screen - not able to type password

Hi,

Has anyone come across the situation where, at the log on screen, you click
a user name to get the 'line' on which to type the password, but can not.
The 'line' appears, but there is no cursor and typing in does not bring up
the 'dots'. The only way in is to use 'ctrl-alt-delete' to bring up the
standard login window. It does not happen all the time - sometimes it
behaves normal.

I have seen other messages around the internet, but no answers. Does anyone
have any ideas as to what might be causing this, and how to get over it? It
has only started in the last couple of months (but is happening now more
frequently).

I am running XP Pro SP2.

Thanks

Simon

Hello,

I just starting to have this issue last Thursday. I believe there was an
automatic update on Wednesday. I spent some time with Technical Service at
Dell due to another issue with my system. After they fixed that issue, I
have experienced the one you report.

I can not offer assistance, but I am hopeful that by replying we will get
attention to this new issue with Windows XP.

There have been two people posting about this issue in the past several
weeks. Unfortunately there has been no resolution yet.

Similar, but not exact problem. About 2-3 weeks ago my system started
hanging. The system was in power saver mode and after I moved the mouse it
started to repaint the login prompt screen (switch user configuration), but
instead of putting up the list of valid users, it put up an hourglass with a
blue background (not screen of death), and hung. No amount of time,
Ctrl-alt-del, or anything short of holding the power button in for 10 seconds
had any results.

I've checked for spyware and viruses and didn't find any, not having
expected to with the anti-this-that-and-the-other-thing software loaded and
running. No new software or hardware added, short of Microsoft updates and
antivirus definitions.

I'd love to find a resolution short of powering off and restarting. It
seems to happen less often if I close Outlook 2003 before letting it go to
screen saver mode.

Thanks,
Kevin
