USB removable drives error msg on startup

I have installed both a Sandisk Image Mate 8-in-1 memory
card reader and a Lexar multicard reader and both
generate the same error messages. The drives do appear
in My Computer and I can use and access them....BUT they
have yellow exclamation marks next to them in Device
Manager, and EVERY time I restart my system, I get the
New Hardware Wizard which finds them, and then generates
the following error message: "This device cannot be
installed. It is not an installed service". I get this
message for all four slots in the reader, and it makes
startup long and annoying. Both Sandisk and Lexar cannot
help and are telling me it's a Windows problem. I'm
running XP Home with all latest updates and service packs
on a new Gateway P4 system. I've tried connecting the
readers both to a Belkin hub, and directly to the
machine. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled multiple
times. Nothing helps. None of my other USB devices are
a problem, just these "removable drive" devices. Has
anyone here seen this problem?
