USB mass storage devices

L

Loneranger

I have two USB storage devices. A lexar 2.0 USB 6 and 1
card reader and a MP3/reader. The lexar device was
working on my Win XP desktop computer then I updated the
firmware. After that it needed to reinstall but windows
reports a problem with the device and can't load the
Generic mass storage device driver. But the lexar device
actually functions normally. The brand new MP3 device
does exactly the same thing and it also still works. But
everytime you plug them in they have to install. For
testing I installed both devices on my P4 WinXP laptop
and no problem was encountered at all. But if you look at
the device properties it lists two device drivers,
disk.sys and partmgr.sys. My desktop only lists the
partmgr.sys. I have tried copying over drivers and total
restore of my system back to before the problem started
but nothing helps. Any ideas?

Glad to see I am not the only person with this problem. I have been
encountering the exact problem with the same results and have been looking
all over for help. Maybe someone here can finally get us an answer.
Let me know if you have any luck.

Hi,

First, disconnect all USB devices including USB mouse and keyboard from the PC. Use PS/2 mouse and keyboard temporarily.

Try run regedit and delete the VID subkeys for your USB devices (except for the USB mouse and keyboard, if any).
Note: Export the USB VID subkeys before deletion and save them to a specific folder for just in case.

HKEY_Local_Machine/System/Current Control Set/Enum/USB/Vid_xxxxxxxx
Vid_xxxxxxx stand for various USB devices, you need to open it by double click and see the description at the right pane.

If you cannot delete the VID subkeys, go to device manager/universal serial bus controller/xxx PCI to USB Open Host Controller, right click and uninstall the XXX PCI to USB Open Host controller.
If your device is using USB 2.0, uninstall the XXX PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller as well.
Click apply and OK then reboot.
After reboot, windows should find the USB controllers and re-install the USB drivers.
(Note: you need to have already installed SP1 or SP1a for USB 2.0)
Re-connect the USB devices one at each time, Keyboard, mouse, card reader, storage device, etc.

Hope it helps.
Let me know the result at mokpetc at yahoo dot com dot hk.

I am not sure about Loneranger, but for me the problem occurred with two
devices, one is a USB device but the other is an EIDE hard drive, so I am
not sure what removing the USB subkeys and controllers is going to
accomplish.

Loneranger - What brand motherboard is it? I have an Intel motherboard and
the problem for me may have occurred after I flashed the bios.

A word of caution! Never flash a bios unless you need it to solve a specific
problem. Many times a newer bios will cause problems that were not existent
with an older version. After all, a bios is just "code", and look at the
problems other companies have with code and updates. Hell - Microsoft has
been known to issue bad updates!

Peter's solution was a partial fix. It did put back USB 2.0 hub properties that were missing. But the original problem is still there. If you try Peter's solution you need to change the permissions on the VIDxxxxx items in the registry before you can delete them

I have an Intel D850 MV MB ....... Windows XP has been fully updated.
