Need help, please?????

I have installed both a Sandisk Image Mate 8-in-1 memory
card reader and a Lexar multicard reader and both
generate the same error messages. The drives do appear
in My Computer and I can use and access them....BUT they
have yellow exclamation marks next to them in Device
Manager, and EVERY time I restart my system, I get the
New Hardware Wizard which finds them, and then generates
the following error message: "This device cannot be
installed. It is not an installed service". I get this
message for all four slots in the reader, and it makes
startup long and annoying. Both Sandisk and Lexar cannot
help and are telling me it's a Windows problem. I'm
running XP Home with all latest updates and service packs
on a new Gateway P4 system. I've tried connecting the
readers both to a Belkin hub, and directly to the
machine. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled multiple
times. Nothing helps. None of my other USB devices are
a problem, just these "removable drive" devices. Has
anyone here seen this problem?

Hi;
?Error generated ONLY when the devices are EMPTY
or even when a card is already inserted at BootUP?
The reason I ask is that the other USB devices are what's known as "active"
devices.
They are already in a"working" state at boot (or at least reach a circuit
board with a given end-of-line resistance/capacitance) thus don't generate
errors.
You get the same "disconnected device message" if a cable from the PC's NIC
to (say) a router or DSL modem is pulled off. The network interface card
then not being active.
The same yellow "!" also.

Yes, it happens whether or NOT any card is inserted in
the reader. The device cannot be installed because
the "service is not an installed service". This happens
four separate times on startup (one for each slot in the
reader). Thanks for responding. K.

Hi Karen M;
Do you get the same run-around or conclusion with Gateway's service?

I also assumed from the very start that you installed the latest Microsoft
USB v.2.0 patch, provided drivers for the devices and such before the
devices were declared to XP.

Do you have TweakUI or similar tweakers installed: some Drive Letters
blocked by it(them)?
RE: These devices all require a free/extra letter be available for each
slot.

I have all the latest Windows updates, including the USB
2.0 patch. All the installation software for the devices
say that Windows XP needs no driver installation. They
already have assigned drive letters in Device Manager,
and I can use and access the reader slots, it's just this
very annoying "hardware found" every time I restart. I'd
just like to get rid of the error messages.....it takes
up time on restart. The manufacturers of the readers
(both) have told me the readers were defective, which is
highly unlikely. I haven't tried Gateway support. I
used to have a Dell system......if Gateway support is
anything like Dell's, I'd just as soon avoid that route,
thank you. K.

Hi;
Now know "exactly" what's the annoyance!
Quite different from the 1st stated, dare I say!

Try:
Start/Settings
/Control Panel/
System/Hardware
/Device Manager
/Universal Serial Bus
/Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controler/
Advanced===>Don't tell about USB Errors
Check All the other USBs underneath it to make sure that the setting
transferred to all of them.
That's as far as you control the hubs' messages.
