I recently purchased my first flash drive. I am running XP Pro SP2 on my PC
and have several USB ports, some at Version 1.1 and some at Version 2.0.
When I put the flash drive in any of the USB 2.0 ports, nothing happens;
they don't seem to be seeing the flash drive. When I put the flash drive in
a USB 1.1 port, the flash drive is recognized but XP displays a message
telling me that I will get much better results by using a 2.0 port.
What do I need to do to get the 2.0 ports to work correctly?
I did a Google search that took me to a site saying that USB 2.0 doesn't
work correctly in XP with SP2; it pointed me to a knowledgebase article that
recommended downloading a Hotfix for this problem. I've got the Hotfix
"invitation" but haven't actually downloaded the Hotfix yet. I talked to a
colleague who works with XP all the time and he's never heard of an issue
involving USB 2.0 so I'm wondering if this Hotfix is really the best
approach. Would it make more sense to update drivers or something?
I don't know anything about troubleshooting USB issues so forgive my
ignorance in this matter. In fact, I'm not even sure how to tell which of my
ports are 1.1 and which are 2.0 or how to match those ports to the various
USB items in Device Manager. For what it's worth, my other USB devices like
my mouse and scanner seem to work fine.
For what it's worth, I'm not actually all that worried about the flash drive
performing to its full potential; the 1.1 ports go fast enough for my
purposes. However I am very actively considering adding another hard drive
to this computer so I'd like to get USB 2.0 working so that the hard drive
will not crawl if I get a USB-based hard drive.
By the way, with USB 2.0 capable of 480 mpbs, is that going to be faster
than having an internal hard drive or is it still going to be slower? I
can't recall the actual speeds of a regular internal drive. Perhaps I should
just get an internal drive and avoid having to mess with USB altogether....
