USB Flash Write Protected

USB Flash Write Protected

PC with Win XP SP3 all updates and exFat driver installed.

Wrote files to Sony 32G USB Flash (formatted exFat).

Unplugged then later plugged in again.

Now copy says USB Flash is write protected.

Trying to write a 89K file. USB Flash has 840MBytes free.

Use Safely Remove before pulling USB Flash.

Can see nothing related to write protect in disk Properties.

Why?

How do I unprotect it?

Different USB flash I can write to no problem.

I get a similar problem under my WinXP machine.
I just disconnect and reconnect the USB device and it turns off the write protection.

"USB drive appears to be write protected

2. Windows can write protect USB drives too.
Check out the registry under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies.

The value 'WriteProtect' should be absent or set to '0'.
"

Ut's possible that is a per-device setting, and the entry would
be somewhere in that general vicinity. It wouldn't make
sense to write protect the entire machine, just the stick in
question.

You could test on another computer, and see if the write
protect is there as well. To tell if it is a hardware
issue, or a registry setting.

Plugged int a Win 7 PC.
Asked for it to be scanned and did that.
Win 7 Found no problems.

On Win 7 PC Can copy paste a file OK.

Back on Win XP and can now copy to the pen.

Win 7 fixed the Win XP 32G Sony Pen write protect problem.

What?????

By any chance was the device previously formatted on the
Windows 7 PC ? So the file system was installed by Windows 7 ?

I have the Win 7 wanting to scan my USB Pen drives (different ones)
before.

All of my pen drives are used to transport files from one Win XP laptop
to my travel Win XP laptop so usually a Win 7 PC is never involved.

In this case this pen drive (exFAT) has been used in the Win XP laptop
for months then put in a Win XP desktop then again for weeks back in
the laptop pair only.

Never a problem until now.

I suspect it has something to do with my Win XP laptop since I see a
few other problems: e.g. Mesnews will not send posts to either of my
newsgroup servers.
I have to use a different app, Opera, to send posts on this laptop.

Currently I am on a Win 7 Pro desktop and MesNews works OK here.

As have I.

That is generally my usage as well.

Sometimes, I see the problem. Sometimes, I do not. AFAIR,
Windows 7 has never found an error on its scan. I tried a utility to
reformat the stick (whatever that does exactly) to no avail.
