Unwanted ads on my PC screen

As soon as I log onto IE, my screen becomes inundated with all sorts of
unwanted ads. As fast as I delete them, the next few are ready to make me
crazy. Some kind of virus must have tken possession of my PC. I have Norton
Antivirus but seems not to help. Any other virus protection software that I
can try? I have also used AVG without success. I use Windows XP.
