When I open a Ms-Access2000 database (on my PC, it does not have MS-Access
installed, OS is Windows XP ) which is copied from another PC , it gives
the unrecognised database format error.
Please help on this
regards and thanks.

Sounds like you need to install Access on that computer, an Access MDB/MDE
will not run without either full Access or the Access runtime.

But the specific error your getting normally comes up when you are trying to
run a newer version of the database on an older version of Access.

Do other databases work on you computer?

Does the original file still work on the other PC? you may have to copy it
again.

other databses do work on the PC. the version number for the ms-access.exe
file on my PC is 8.0.0.4008 and that on the other PC is 9.0.0.2719. Does
this difference mean anything Sir? The database works fine on the other PC.

Just trying to calculate the version,

v11 = Access 2003
v10 = Access 2002 (xp)
v9 = Access 2000
v8 = Access 97

so by my calculation you have the runtime for Access 97 and you are trying
to run an Access 2000 mdb, if that is the case it will not work, solutions
to the problem are on the computer convert the database to a previous
version.

Is the database split front-end/back-end?

Do both computers need to run this database?

If you need to run this database on both computers and you don't want to
upgrade your version of Access then the only solution is convert to a
previous version (Access 97), and run that on both, you will get message on
the Access 2000 asking to convert to Access 2000. If this is the way you are
going to proceed post back here if you get the conversion message and I will
dig out the document that will allow you to run an Access 97 version
database on Access 2000 without the messages.

Another point to note, you may loose features by compiling to a previous
version, your best solution is to upgrade your Access 97 version to Access
2000.

Post back if you need more info.

Sir,
the databse is meant to be running only on my
PC ie the access runtime version is 97. the database is not split into
fe/be.
Sir, so now what I understand is I have to get the database converted to a
previous version ans then try copying it again to my PC.

Thank you very much for the valuable help, Sir.

Dear Sir,
the error message "unrecognized database format" has been taken care of. I
had converted the MDB to an earlier version. copied it to my PC then on my
PC I created a system.mdw fiel using the wrkgadm.exe utility .then I create
a shortcut on the desktop and set the target to the msaccess.exe in the
system, the system.mdw file in the system using the wrkgp switch and the
MDB file in the system.

but whe i double click the icon ,a window opens up with no error messages
but only the menus-FILE,EDIT and HELP are displayed. no forms / reports are
being displayed.

kindly help on this.

Sorry for not getting back to you quicker.

because you are running the Access runtime, all the default toolbars and
menu are gone, you have to program your own, you need to set a startup form,
when in your database in full Access so that when the database is opened in
the Access runtime it knows what form to open first.
