Hi Glen,

Do you also have Access 97 installed on your PC? One cause of this error is if the last
version of Access that you had open was Access 97, you used Windows Explorer to navigate
to your database file and you attempted to double-click it to open it. The .mdb file
extension got associated with the last version of Access that you had running (ie. Access
97), which cannot open an Access 2000 database.

Try opening Access 2000 by itself. Then select your file and open it.

Well, get out your backup disk. :-{(

That's the best option, if you have one and it's reasonably current.
If it's not, try in this order:

- MAKE A BACKUP now. Some of these fixes can prevent later fixes.
- Find the file JETCOMP.EXE on your computer (should be in
WINDOWS\SYSTEM but might be elsewhere); run it and use it to repair
the damaged database. If you don't have JETCOMP go to
http://support.microsoft.com and search for it.
- If this doesn't work, there's a faint hope that you can create a
new, empty database and use File... Get External Data... Import to
import all (or the salvagable) objects from the damaged database.
Usually if you get the "unrecognized" message this won't work, though.
- Contact Peter Miller at http://www.pksolutions.com for his highly
recommended database salvage service. He'll charge a (reasonable) fee
only if he succeeds.

A2000 is *notorious* for its tendency toward corruption. AccessXP and
Access2003 seem to be much more stable, and it's worth upgrading for
that reason alone.

Good luck!

Also visit the Access Corruptions FAQ at my website for some more

Wasn't that more true when you the developer were working in the MDB.
Although with the various SPs it's quite a bit more stable.

A client is running a mixture of 20 to 30 A97 and A2000 MDEs against
an A97 MDB BE without any corruption problems for six or ten months.
