Uninstalling Pre-Installed Software

J

Joe Christl

Hi,

I just purchased a new HP Pavillion 520n, and I noticed that there's
alot of software pre-installed that I will never register or use. I
would like to uninstall this software, but don't see any entries under
the Add/Remove Software (ie. Norton AntiVirus, Office XP Trial, etc).

Does anyone now how can I safely go about trimming my desktop without
removing these things manually from the file browser?

Thanks for helping out,
Joe

Items on the Desktop should be shortcuts and can just be deleted. Be sure
by checking Properties if there is no curved arrow on the icon.

As to the actual programs... Watch for other replies before doing this.
I just deleted the unwanted trial programs. Problem is, everything related
to them may not be removed. Also make sure other applications aren't
dependent on it/them, which may mean you have to buy.

Look under the program's folder itself for any "uninstall" icon or
options. Or go to the Program Files\<program>\ and see if any
uninstall icon/program is there.

Worst case, re-install everything from scratch.

Stop right there.... Format, clean install...

I tried that already. Problem with that is, there's no drivers for
the Onboard audio and video. The video was no problem, but I couldn't
get the audio to work properly. Also there's alot of connections for
digital camera's on the front of this and those drivers get lost too.

THEN when I went to the Windows Update Manager, NO UPDATES WOULD
INSTALL!!! WTF??

So I restored from the Restore disk, and am trying again

Next time buy a Dell, Dude.
I love Dell [I have 4 of them] but I'm having the same problem with my new
Dell. Add/remove or uninstall doesn't work because it asks me to insert a
disc which I don't have. I tried all the normal ways to get it off with no
sucess.

All the Dell's I've seen have a full set of CDs, If you
don't call Dell.

Oh yeah!

Web Results 1 - 20 of about 4,300,000 for HP problems. (0.34
seconds)
Web Results 1 - 20 of about 2,140,000 for Dell problems. (0.20
seconds)

Both are great choices. And, let's not forget their Indian Helpdesks.

Items on the desktop will be shortcuts (with arrows) to the programs,
these you can safely delete.

Completely removing the programs will be more difficult unless there is
an uninstall program provided for each in the folder where it is (find
where that is before deleting the shortcut by r-click on that and
Properties - see the Target panel).

If there is not such uninstaller, about all you can do is delete the
folder of the program (I'd start by renaming it and making sure nothing
else is impacted) and then you *could* use regedit.exe to delete the
keys relevant to the maker name concerned at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\makername
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\makername

This is OK for ordinary applications, but often *not* for things that
deal with the hardware, like CD burning packages. Those need further
work to remove completely, even if they have an uninstall - come back if
one of these (eg Nero or Easy CD Creator) is involved.

Everyone outsources now. You can take the outsourced support which comes
with your Dell/HP/etc. or you can call M$ and pay per incident to get
outsourced help. Ugh.

The issue was software media supplied with the computer,
Dell does and HP doesn't/
Dell sells a ton of computers and your Google results show
that they have 1/2 the problems of HP.

Yes, I know... to both points. Still, neither is the best choice for your
money.

Well I think that kind of depends on your needs and computing abilities.
I didn't need a high-end system for my 10 year old.
I was going to build one for her but decided to do a quick check on dell's
website.
It would have costed me more to build the system I got her than it did to
buy it from Dell.
If you want high-end you have to customize your Dell adding the features you
want and you then will pay through the nose, in my opinion, but if you only
want something simple I would recommend them anytime.
