After reinstall of XP operating system

Hi, group. I'm helping my mother-in-law get her Dell laptop back to where it
was. Dell had a virus. Mom worked with Dell tech support and they supposedly
had her reinstall the operating system. Laptop now works okay, but her
Norton Antivirus 2002 (and other pre-installed software such as Works, etc.)
is no longer installed. Normal?

I tried to reinstall NAV using the re-install disk that came with the
laptop. No joy. System claimed it needed a file/program called "Windows
Installer." Any idea where this resides?

Ideas welcome and appreciated.

Thanks, Harry. I checked it out. Just need to decide whether I want to mess
with the registry of someone else's computer. ;-)

In this particular situation just ensure you make a registry backup first.
Run System Restore to create a restore point and then install the download
from the link at Kelly's site. It should install the windows installer and
enable you to install NAV.

I ran into this problem on a customer's computer. There's information on how
to fix it on Symantec's web site. It was pretty simple, but offhand I don't
recall exactly what the steps were, but I think it was just a matter of a
corrupt file.

Thanks D. Didn't think to check the Symantec site yet. Assumed it was a
"Windows" issue. I appreciate the reply and will check it out. Joe
