Unable to write to blank DVD+RW

Guest

Hi, I just bought 15x Blank DVD+RW from Tesco, they are MR.DVDs that they
have just started selling. I wanted these to copy just over 50Gb of files n
stuff so I can format my hard drive. But for some reason I am unable to send
anything to the DVD Rom while these DVDs are in. It just says preparing to
copy thats stays for a minute or two then vanishes and thats it. My DVD drive
is a Philips DVDR824P DVD+RW recorder. It is enabled to write to dvds so I
haven't got a clue what is wrong. Your help will be much appreciated. Many
Thanks, Lee

What software are you using to write to the drive? You can't just
copy files there, if that's what you're trying to do.

What do mean, "15x"? What's an "MR DVD"? How are you trying to "send" the
data? First you say you're trying to "send" the data to a "DVD Rom" then you
say it's a DVD+RW. Which is it?

sounds like a compatibility problem, it just doesn't like the discs
you've chosen. My cdrw will not even acknowledge some cheap discs.
problem is you've spent good money on them and the shop won't
necessarily take them back. As you obviously haven't been able to use
any of them it's worth a try though. Take a look at the prices of
blanks somewhere online, such as

http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_FOR_DVD_R_RW_CLICK_HERE.html

and you'll probably find you save money buying this way even taking
post and packaging into consideration.

XP has no native DVD-writing capability, so you have never been able to do
that without the help of some third-party application. And now you say it's
CDs that won't work.

I have been using Windows XP built in cd/dvd writing capabilities. I have no other software installed that will be able to enable me to write cds/dvds. Its just these cds that are not working so I guess it is because they are not compatible with my DVD writer.

You have been asked several times in this thread, which software are you
using to write to the DVD's? You have still to answer the question.
Further question - have you written to other brands of DVD's before on
this machine?

I have mentioned above that I am not using any software like Nero I am just using XP's built in writing service. Right click on a file(s) or folder(s) and click send to then click your CD writer or DVD writer. There you able to write to your cd/dvds. Yes I have written to other brands, I have used Sony CD/RW, TDK CD-R, Memorex CD-R, Maxell CD-R, Philips DVD-R, TDK DVD-R. But have never tired DVD+RW before. Read through my DVD=RW's manual my DVD+RW is able to read and write to DVD+RW dvds. The only conclusion is that due to them being cheap DVDs and not a well known brand "MR." they are just not compatiable with my DVD Writer. www.strandeurope.com is the website for these DVDs.

***Please Also Note***

I have just tired to burn files on to the DVD using Nero, CD Burner XP Pro 3
and without success. So I put in a blank TDK DVD+R that I have spare and
noticed that when you open the CD folder obviously its blank but does tell
you the capacity: 4,700,372,992 bytes - 4.37GB where as the new DVD+RW show
Capacity: 0 and 0GB. So I guess the DVD+RW is not reading these DVD+RWs and I
should just give up and try and take them back to Tesco for a refund and buy
a more reputable brand.

DVD comes in two formats DVD- and DVD+. To write to DVD+RW both your
software {I believe Nero does} and your DVD drive must support the DVD+
format.

Newer computer DVD drives support writing to both DVD- and DVD+ format.
However, older drives support only the DVD- format.

It has nothing to do with being incompatible. As several people
have told you, including in the message you're replying to, XP
has built-in CD-writing capability, but *not* built-in DVD
writing capability.

If you've successfully done this before, almost certainly you did
it with CDs, and not with DVDs.

Many times I have succesfully created data DVDs just by using windows xps facility that u can also use for cds. I am sorry if I am not being clear or something. OK so why when I put a DVD+R into my DVD+RW Drive it comes up with how much space is on the DVD and when I do the same with my DVD+RW DVD is shows 0 for space?

Have you formatted the DVD disc? All RW discs must be formatted before you
can write to them.
