unable to view jpeg image files

I have a new PC that runs Windows XP. I have had my digital photos (stored
as jpegs)on the PC and was able to view them in the thumbnail view of Windows
Explorer or in Photo Editor. I now cannot view the jpeg image. I get a
"preview not available" message or an "invalid format" message when trying to
view the images. It seems that the jpeg files may have become corrupt in
some way. I have upgraded the OS to SP2, but am uncertain if this problem is
linked to the upgrade. Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Repeated messages are not necessary.

Maybe these articles will offer some ideas:

John,

Sorry for the multiple posts and thank you for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, none of the articles referenced addresses the problem that I
am having. The first article addresses the No Preview Available" and "File
Format Is Not Supported" Error, which is what I get, but I do not use AOL or
CompuServe. I read the second article, but it deals with image problems when
opening an HTML file. I have no issues with photos in HTML documents. And
the third article deals with blocked images in Outlook, which is not my issue.

It seems that I can have a good image file on the harddrive and once it is
opened, it then becomes damaged and will not preview or open.

Any other suggestions?
Thank you.

What is the extension (format) of the files
you cannot view?

Running the following command may be
worth a try:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

All of the effective files are .jpeg

I ran "REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL" and got the response that you described, but it
did not fix the problem.

Any other thoughts? Thank you.

Some other thoughts are posted under
your other thread. Posting the same question
multiple times can get confusing for everyone.

When I run the program the following error comes up:

LOADLIBRARY (SHIMGVW.DLL) failed. The specific module could not be found.

What do I need to do? I don't use AOL or Compuserve either.

=============================
Might be worth a try to delete your
shimgvw.dll file from your system32
folder. Windows File Protection will
replace it with a fresh copy.

Now, try Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer.
