Unable to view app and system logs in Event Viewer: Access is denied.

When I go into the event viewer I and select Security to
view the security logs everything is ok. When I select
either Application of System to view those logs I get
this error:

Unable to complete the operation "Application".
Access is denied.

I made sure I had the appropriate permissions on the .evt
files in system32/config. Is there another security
setting somewhere causing this issue?

Any ideas? I really need to see the system logs.
