Unable to see Win98 comp from XP comp

Ardnerus

Hello all,
I've hooked a couple of computers in a peer to peer
network using a simple hub. I've got one XP computer
running alongside 3 other Win98 computers. Each comp has
a number of network shares. They all have TCP/IP and
NetBEUI protocols running.
Now the problem. I can view the shares in the XP comp
from all the other Win98 comps but I CANNOT view the
shares in the Win98 comps from the XP comp! I've tried
restarting the machines, reinstalling the protocols,
dumping the TCP/IP protocol and running on pure NetBEUI
but all with no solutions.
Anyone out there with any ideas? My client is fuming
mad and is considering dumping XP due to this problem.
Anything I overlooked? Please help! Thanks all!

Regards,
Ardnerus

Hello

I have had the same problems.
It is because you do not have a browser as well as other
services working.

Right click on My Computer and choose Manage.
In the new window choose Services.
In services choose Compuer Browser.
It most probabaly not running. Look at dependancies.
It will tell you what Browser depends on.
Start those services and make them AuTOMATIC.
Net Logon most probably will not start, unless you are on
a domain.

You should now be able to see all computers.
If not look at all dependancies and atart the relevant
ones.

You might still have as I have, a problem copying and
moving files, depending on the direction you are going in.
I keep keep getting ACCESS DENIED messages .

Mike,
You are a genius! I've been reading posts about this for
four days and nothing worked until I read yours.
Thank you!

Hello

I am no genius. I have been fiddling around for a while.
There are so many posts with problems like ours. There is
almost nothing on the Microsoft site. I have seen nothing
about this anywhere. I got the clue from someone at work.

I hope some Microsoft person sees this.

The problem stems from the point when anyone wants to add
networking, when none existed before. The system adds the
hardware, but does not start the necessary services. The
Wizard should do that also, but does not.
