Unable to access programs or start menu after SP 3 install

Twice I have downloaded SP 3 on my lenovo laptop. Each time, the download
appears to go smoothly, but when the desktop appears, none of my shortcuts
work nor am I able to use the Start Menu. I have had to go into safe mode
and restore my machine to get it to work again.

I'm concerned that I may be missing some important security updates. I use
Kapersky Internet Security and have no known viruses, etc.

I do get fairly frequent crashes with the notice that my "System as
recovered from a serious error" message. It always manages to "recover." I
dnot't think this is related to my SP3 problems, but I have been unable to
correct this problem, so I mention it.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom on these issues.

You must fix all existing problems before updating to SP3.

The computer may automatically restart, or you may receive a "serious error"
message or a Stop error message in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, or in
Windows 2000

The HaxDoor virus may cause a "STOP 0x00000050" or "STOP 0x0000008e" error
message

Posting a copy of the Stop Error Report would help focus help being
offered.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

As already pointed out it is unwise to update a system which is not
error free.

Do the automatic restarts occur during the boot process or after? Do
they occur in safe mode?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
