It would seem to me that you should be telling yourself what to do with
your time, not what others should do with theirs.

Who says linux can't do anything as good (or better than) windows?

Now *that's* funny!

Why on earth would someone go thru the time to do this?

Jeff

To prove that WGA is a royal POS, catches no pirates and only
inconveniences paying customers, of course!

It's also absolutely hilarious that MS would declare Linux to be "genuine
Windows".

Again, it sounds like a few bored hackers....

Care to address the issue or can you only lamely put down the people who

You idiot (that's an insult!)! Are you stupid or what (another insult!)!
That's exactly what he did.
You can't afford Vista...admit it!

How did I put them down? They hacked the microsoft website to make it think
a linux box was a windows box. Thats called hacking. People who do hacking
are called hackers.

I think they even came out with a movie by that name...

We stuck a Rolls-Royce grill on the front of VW...fooled everyone! :)

I drive a VW, thanks for the suggestion! ;)

I also agree with your analogy because Windows like a Rolls-Royce is way
over-priced for the market, and VW is the everymans' car because it is
the most practical and works the best.

What am I missing here?
Would I be correct to assume that a Windows Defender download is useless
to a Linux user?

One could always choose to run it under an emulator. You obviously
never read the article, otherwise you would know the user's purpose for
doing this.
And as far as Microsoft losing control of who gets its updates: As I see
it, if a Linux user is able to download some kind of Microsoft update
that is completely useless to the Linux user, what difference should
that make to Microsoft? And what difference should that make to Windows
users?

I don't know what difference it would make to who except that MS is
trying al all costs to reatin as much control as possible over it's
users and software. This is clearly one area where they are failing
miserably right now.
I really mean these as questions. I'm not trying to get into a
Win-vs.-Lin argument. I'm just not sure I see the relevance of this to
everyday users. What am I missing?

Yeah but the analogy portends to the fact that you can't make a silk
purse out of a sows ear.
Can you? :)

But the real question...or test...would be if they were running a
bogus...re:pirated...copy of windows and they were able to trick ms
servers into believing it was a genuine copy.
Otherwise I don't see any relative merit to what they did?
Do you?

First of all it really doesn't have anything to do with Vista since this is
between a linux box and a microsoft website so its way off topic.

I could hack a linux (or any other OS for that matter) to make it crash all
the time. But why would I want to?

Again, it looked to me like someone who was bored and has something against
microsoft.

Wow, you really didn't read the article, obviously. The 'people' in the
article who did it followed the exact same method I use in order to
validate my genuine windows XP with firefox installed in order to get
downloads from the MS site. That's it.

What would you do with Microsoft OS updates on a linux box?

Just because they can do it doesn't mean it serves any real purpose. For
the people who have licensed and activated copies of Vista (or xp) why
should they do this and possibly risk screwing it up and then NOT getting
their downloads?

There is never any merit to anything you post Frank. You're a proven
