Helpful transition info

That's an interesting blog post. Not sure how "helpful" it is, though... but
interesting? Yes.

I work entirely with Intel boxes running Windows, at home and at work.
(Well... I -do- have one AMD box at home... running XP Home.) We have a 21
year old kid at work, a real "computer geek." (Smart kid... not being
facitieous...) He went out and purchased a MacBook Pro a couple of months
ago. The first time he brought it into work and showed it to me, he was
quite proud of his new acquisition, and rightfully so, I think. It is, after
all, a nice piece of machinery. He fired up VMWare and was obviously
excited... "Hey, check this out!" Okay... 2 seconds later... the Mac
equivalent of a BSOD.

Wow... that happens on Macs too? I guess so. I related this story only
because the guy who wrote the blog post says he intends to run VMWare on a
MacBook. One hopes his experience differs from my co-worker's. Much like my
experience with Vista, a generally positive one, differs from other's
experiences with Vista.

Found a link on that page to an interview with Sterling Ball, CEO of Ernie
Ball. MS went into the Ernie Ball offices a few years ago and busted them
for license violations. So Sterling Ball told his IT folks "No more MS,
ever." And they've been running RH workstation since. Mr. Ball does lament,
however, the lack of certain types of applications in the Linux world. He
also discloses that they install only the minimum required software to allow
a person to carry out their duties. Point being, yes, Linux is a viable
alternative in the business world, but I continue to wonder how viable it is
as a home system? Will my Plextor xConvert work with SUSE 10.1? Will my ATI
TV Wonder Pro?

And believe me... despite what others might think... I'm not an MS or Vista
fanboi. Every couple of years I dip my toes back into the Linux pool and
have always, thus far, found the water too murky for a deep dive.

And, no... I'm not moving to Vista on my primary home PC because there are
no drivers for the ATI TV Wonder Pro or the Plextor xConvert and I cannot
afford, at the moment, to run out and buy a new TV card and conversion box.
(Although there may be one device to do both... don't know as I write
this...)

I will continue to run Vista in a VM on this box and as the host OS on
another box here, mainly so I can continue to acclimate to the new aspects
of the OS and attempt to assist others here, and I -will- continue to play
with SUSE 10.1 in a VM.

I agree: alternative options are available. I would caution anyone
considering moving to Linux in the same manner that I would caution anyone
considering moving to Vista: do your homework before making the move. Be an
educated consumer of OS's. And drivers. And applications. Prior to making
the move.

Anyway, thanks for the link... stimulated the grey matter. (Even if my post
doesn't... LOL)
