Turn off "computer may be at risk balloon" at start up

M

Moxieman

Windows XP Home edition. I upgraded to SP3 and turned off automatic updates.
Now, EVERY time I turn on the computer, I log in and get that balloon saying
that my "computer may be at risk" because I don't have auto update turned on.

How do I stop having that blasted balloon come up -- without turning on
automatic updates -- every time I turn on my computer?

Thanks,

Start, Control Panel, Security Center.

Bottom left side. "Change the way Security Center alerts me".

You can uncheck whichever item you do not want to be notified of.

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

Scroll down to Security Center and double click on it.

For the Startup type, select "Disabled". Click on the "Stop" button.

Note this stops everything in the Security Center [firewall turned off, AV
out of date or turned off, etc.] from notifying you. You could also go into
the security center and disable it's monitoring for updates, but stopping
this service is just one less thing running.

If you keep your system up to date, no problem.

I also turn them off.

well, I'm very quick and click the x while it is loading, and it
doesn't slow me down at all. Or I could leave it and it goes off i
think

But you can remove it, i'm sure

You are right they are called Balloon Tips.. (as oppose to bubbles
which is what I had thought)

Download TweakUI , go through, and you will see.

Choose "Tskbar and start menu", then disable "Enable Baloon Tips"

They're never useful anyway if you know them all..

If you have any problems, you could always reenable them.. And see one
like "low disk space" or low on virtual memory.. I don't recall
there being any others of potential use! Of course, if low VM, you
prob set it low, so you'd know. And if low disk space, performance
would suffer so you would check. It is a cause of a slow comp.

Not a good idea from Gis Bun. The way I showed you is much better and safer.

Ramone

you can debate that with him.

Interesting option there you mentioned, in "security center".

security center is not such a useful screen usually.. And those links
on the left look like - links opening some kind of help. I would not
have expected one to bring up a [little] window with such a useful
setting..

I haven't tried it though.. I like my popup..

I think it actually signals to me that windows is near enough fully
loaded..

It might be the last if the icons that appears in the taskbar when
windows is loading. Though I guess i coul disable the bubble and the
icon will still be there.

Except for those who are novices, the Security Center is plainly useless.

If a user knows XP well can't verify that your firewall is turned on and
your anti-virus is up to date [the latter will bug you most likely anyways],
then there is a problem.

Some turn off Automatic Updates and prefer to see what MS is dishing out.

Outside of that, as I said, one less service to load.
