Trouble uninstalling a program

H

Herbert Eppel

I'm trying to uninstall a redundant version of one of my programs (via
Add or Remove Programs), but the uninstaller complains about a missing
external DLL.

The message is in German (because the program is German, I suppose), but
it basically says

Internal error, unable to load or call external DLL. Please contact your
supplier etc.

This is an ancient program version and I don't think the supplier will
be able to help.

I still have the original installation CD - could this be of any use?

Or could I simply delete the program folder under C:\Program Files and
then somhow clear up the registry or do whatever cleanup is necessary
manually?

Thank you.

You still have the original installation CD? You're looking good.

Simply install the program again (to the same location where you
originally installed it.) After restarting your computer, you should be
able to successfully uninstall. Remember to temporarily disable your
security software when installing or uninstalling.

yes, you have an
excellent idea and
will work.

however, there are
times that the methodology
you are going to use, has
to be done in safemode.

but one mode or another,
you will accomplish the task.

in addition, there may
be remnants of the
program left in the
a/r listing.

but there are utilities
that can help to clean
those up as well.

Hi Leonard

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I'm going round in circles, i.e. when I try and reinstall
the program from the CD it tells me I have to uninstall the existing
version first!

Sadly, the uninstaller doesn't actually tell me which DLL it can't find.

Perhaps I should go back to the supplier for advice after all?

They are generally quite responsive and there is some hope that they
have an answer, or do you have another idea?

The supplier came back with an answer, basically suggesting that I must
have removed some component manually in the past (which I'm not aware of
and I don't think I did).

Anyway, they suggested deleting the program folder manually and cleaning
the registry (they suggested CCleaner) and searching the disk for any
other entries that may be related.

I did all this and everything seems to work OK (including, importantly,
the new version of the program), but for some reason I still see an
entry for the old program in the software list displayed by Add or
Remove Programs.

This isn't a problem, of course, but I'm curious as to where this entry
might be stored and how to get rid of it.

Any suggestions for how to get rid of the redundant entry in "Add or
Remove Programs"?

Try CCleaner's Tools Uninstall function (Delete Entry)..
