Trouble installing .Net Framework 3.5 SP1

S

Steve

I have tried several times on both my computers to install the .Net framework
3.5 SP1 update. Both computers run XP home edition with SP3. I have tried
installing a downloaded copy as well as the bootstrap version.

Each time I try to install I get a message about half way through asking me
to stop the install with a message box asking me to retry, cancel or ignore.
Retry brings the same box up and cancel stops the install completely. If I
press ignore the install seems to continue then I get a message telling me
the installation was complete.

If I go into Add or Remove programs it lists the SP1 update but when I go
into Microsoft Update I keep getting asked to download and install the
update. If I go into update history it says the installation was canceled.

Each time I have disabled Norton Internet Security (including the firewall)
and turned off Spybot. I have also used the msinstall cleaner to clear
installations before trying again

I have a 256Kb/s ADSL connection so downloading this update can take up to 3
hours.

Can you help me?

First determine which versions of .NET Framework are installed and
whether any service packs have been applied:
See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Next download to your hard drive each version of NET
you have on your PC. download the installation files
(do not use Windows Update) from this list
"Where to download the .Net Redistributables"
http://www.pagestart.com/netframeworkdwnldlinks.html

Then uninstall each version .NET you have on your PC,
Starting with the highest version first and finally uninstalling NET 1.x
(Remove 1.1 hotfix after removing .Net 1.1) if its on your PC.

Now use the .Net Cleanup Tool to
remove the last vestiges of .Net

..NET Framework Cleanup Tool:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx
"This .NET Framework cleanup tool is designed to automatically perform a set
of steps to remove selected versions of the .NET Framework from a computer,
It will remove files, directories, registry keys and values and Windows
Installer product registration information for the .NET Framework.
The tool is intended primarily to return your system to a known
(relatively clean) state in case you are encountering .NET Framework
installation, uninstallation, repair or patching errors so that you can try
to install
again". I used this tool after using the Add or Remove Programs uninstall
feature. After using the Cleanup tool only a few folders and files still
remained, so I deleted these manually (See below)

Next reinstall each version you had on your computer
working your way back up to the last (highest version #) of NET.

NET Framework Setup Verification Tool:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx
"This .NET Framework setup verification tool is designed to automatically
perform a set of steps to verify the installation state of one or more
versions of the .NET Framework on a computer."

Then check for any .net security updates/hotfixes using Windows Update.

Have done all that. Verifier tells me that all 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 are installed
properly and 3.5 is installed with SP1. I did the updates as I was installing
each version. The problem is that Microsoft update still keeps telling me I
canceled the installation. The verifier also says I don't have .net framework
4.0. I wasn't even aware it was out.

...The problem is that Microsoft update still keeps
telling me I canceled the installation.

If you're referring to what you see in Update History section at Windows
Update website, don't worry about it (you can't change that entry). As long
as neither WU nor AU still offers KB951847, you're good to go.

The update history keeps telling me that the update was canceled and I still
get the update being offered in WU

Let's try that fix again:

1. Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework versions which
are already installed:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

2. Now see Resolution Method 2 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100
(ignore the title). After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install
all .NET Framework versions manually using the download links on the page.

I have uninstalled everything using method 2 as shown. When I started
reinstalling I got as far as framework 2.0. This has been verified as being
installed. When I try to load anything higher I get a message saying the
installer has encountered a problem and has to close.

Here is a very good clean up tool.

I have used the cleanup tool as recommended and started from scratch again.
I have moved my installer files to a filepath with no spaces in the folder
names. I have verified that I have frameworks 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 with all
updates. When I try 3.0 I get the message that .net framework has encountered
a problem and needs to close, again. The same with 3.5

It happens that Steve formulated :

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0,
3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or
Windows Installer error code "1603"

Try reading these articles, also note that even the
"Cleanup Tool" leaves some files behind and can be deleted
before you try reinstalling. Also check your free drive space,
as during any install temporary folders are created which for
a short period of time doubles the disk space being consumed
during the installation process.

I have uninstalled all my .net versions as before, and cleaned up as before.

I then reinstalled everything again and got as far as 3.5 SP1 but again got
messages from Microsoft Update that I needed to download and install this
update.

I went into hospital for heart surgery and today when I tried MS update
again there was a new update. From what I can gather it patches the bits the
SP1 installer missed and now MS updater tells me everything is installed and
no updates are needed.

Thanks for the help, frustrating as things have been for us both.
