NET framework 3.5 sp1 - prompted to install

Windows automatic update has been prompting me for quite some time to
install NET framework 3.5 sp1. After several install failures, I have
hidden this so-called "high-priority" update.
In "Add or Remove Programs", NET framework 3.5 sp1 is already shown as
installed. I thought there could be a corrupt install, so tried to
remove it for reinstalling, but uninstall also fails: actually it
starts as "Install", not uninstall, and then fails.
There were also 1.1 and 1.1 hotfix installed, but I have uninstalled
1.1 (and the hotfix got removed by itself.) Even after that, it is not
possible to "uninstall" 3.5 sp1. Any suggestions, please? Especially,
is it safe to try using a third-party program (e.g. Revo) to uninstall
3.5 sp1?

The MS NET framework is designed to facilitate downloading
-- so you need it only if you download and instal apps. As is
documented, NET is so organised as to require early components,
thus NET 3 requires both NET 2 and NET 1. If you need this aid,
it might be simpler to read the MS KB documentation and reinstal
all components in order.

"... is designed to facilitate downloading.."? Please clarify.

You don't need it "only if you download and instal apps."

..NET doesn't require earlier components. Software is usually written
using a particular version of .NET. So if software was written for v1,
it has no use for 2, 3, or 3.5.

MS is what detects the presence of .NET and tries to tell everyone all
versions are needed.

1. Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework versions which
are already installed:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

2. Now see Resolution Method 2 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100
(ignore the title). After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install
all .NET Framework versions manually using the download links on the page.

Please read!...

Do I need still need older versions of the .NET Framework on my system after
installing .NET Framework 3.5 SP1?

PA Bear,
Thanks for the detailed response. I haven't had time to carry out the
procedures you have recommended, but I will do it, and get back to you
(through the group) when I have done.
